The San Francisco skyline.

The San Francisco skyline.

It feels like October was four very different months packed
into one. A quarter of the time we travelled, day in and day out, eager to get
South past Point Mendocino, dog tired and thirsty for a slower pace. A quarter
of the time we relaxed in beautiful anchorages in an attempt to restore
ourselves, doing little more than reading, writing, thinking and talking. Another
quarter of the time we learned about each other as traveling companions,
reconnected with old friends in new places and were welcomed by new friends.
And finally, we expended a quarter of our time doing boat work and repairing
our split rudder. Action packed. Here are some highlights:

537 … nautical miles traveled

3 ½ … nights spent at sea

10 ½ … nights spent at anchor

17 … nights at a marina (Berkeley being the lion’s share of that)

2:30(am) … the time at which we decided to leave Shelter Cove and head for Fort Bragg

102 … hours logged on the engine

Not enough … hours under sail

0-5 … average knots of wind for most of our passages

5.14 … cost of diesel in San Fran

2 … times we responded to US Coast Guard calls for assistance

0 … times that our offer of help was actually needed by the US Coast Guard

680 … dollars by which we exceeded our monthly budget

14 … friends visited along the way (and how we justified living beyond our means)

8 … number of “real” showers we’ve enjoyed this month

40 … ounces of hot chocolate consumed

15 … calls made to our parents to either inform them that we were departing or arriving in a new location and/or to provide updates on boat repairs

2 … number of times we considered selling the boat 🙂

5 … how many times Harmony went swimming…not by choice, but out of necessity

Too many … times that the cat gassed us out of the cabin

We are Jeff and Harmony, a couple of Pacific Northwestern homebodies (hogareños) who decided to take our home, a 30 foot Nightingale sailboat named Serenity, and our fat lovable cat, on an adventure. We cruised around Mexico, Central America and the Pacific Ocean for about 3 years until the Pacific Northwest beckoned us back home.
